The annual Grand Central Park Toy Drive kicks off December 1, offering an opportunity to make the holidays brighter for Montgomery County children who would otherwise go without a visit from Santa. That’s not the only way you can help the less fortunate this holiday season, however. We’ve put together a list of local charities eager to accept your holiday help. Montgomery County Food BankLeading the fight against hunger in Montgomery County, the Montgomery County Food Bank provides more than 9.6 million nutritional meals per year through a through network of more than 70 partner pantries, local school districts and community partners. Volunteers are needed daily to help sort and stock food. Monetary donations are always welcome. Keep Us Fed Montgomery CountyAlleviates hunger and food waste by rescuing and redistributing excess nutritional food for hungry neighbors. Last year, they provided 4.25 million pounds of food to local charities. Volunteers are needed to pick up and deliver food. Meals on Wheels Montgomery CountyDelivers nutritious meals to homebound seniors as well as providing ADA-compliant transportation to seniors who cannot drive. Volunteers are needed to deliver meals, assemble breakfast bags, coordinate food drives and help in the kitchen. You can donate the cost of a senior’s meal here. Habitat for Humanity, Montgomery CountyHelp build a future for families through affordable housing. Volunteers are needed to help construct homes, assist with administrative duties and work in the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Every donation and ReStore purchase supports the construction and repair of homes. Family Promise of Montgomery CountyThis organization provides shelter, meals, transportation and compassionate assistance for homeless families with children. Volunteers are needed to serve meals, provide financial literacy training, host families and assist at fundraising events. You can donate here. Assistance League of Montgomery CountyStaffed entirely by volunteers, the Assistance League of Montgomery County helps adults and children through community-based programs. The Assistance League operates a thrift shop in Conroe. All donations stay in Montgomery County. The Rainbow RoomStaffed by Community Partners of Montgomery County volunteers, The Rainbow Room provides children with new, much-needed items such as clothing, diapers, formula, hygiene products, lice shampoo, cleaning supplies and food. Toys, books, car seats, backpacks and portable beds are also available. Check out their wish list and donate today. CASA Child Advocates of Montgomery CountyCASA provides support and advocacy for children who are the victims of abuse and neglect. Volunteers are needed to provide information to judges to ensure children’s best interests are being met. Volunteers are also needed to perform office work as well as planning and executing fundraising events. Online donations are accepted. Angel ReachAngel Reach is a faith-based organization that provides support, transitional living and community outreach for youth ages 16 to 24 who are homeless or aging out of the foster care system. Volunteers are needed to operate the Angels Loft thrift store, teach cooking classes, deliver meals, write grants and more. Donate here. Operation Pets AliveOperation Pets Alive works to reduce killing in shelters through animals treatment, training, adoption, foster and rescue. Volunteers are needed to foster animals, help with social media and website content, administrative tasks and more. Donate here. Henry’s Home Horse & Human SanctuaryProvides forever homes to abused and neglected horses and other farm animals. Animals are then used to help veterans and first responders cope with PTSD, trauma, anxiety and depression.
