College of Medicine to Call Grand Central Park Home

Sam Houston University’s proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine will call Grand Central Park home, improving primary care access in rural and underserved areas and fulfilling our goal of bringing a higher education component to Conroe.

Situated on a 7.3-acre property on Interstate 45 just south of South Loop 336, the college will feature a five-story, 216,000-square-foot building. Phase one of the building will be 108,000 square feet with surface parking. A future phase two expansion will add another 108,000 square feet. Surface parking will then be decreased with the addition of a parking garage.

Construction of the building is scheduled to start by the end of 2018 with substantial completion by December 2019.

The goal of the new medical college is to build a pipeline of qualified medical students from rural and underserved areas, train osteopathic physicians and develop a network of rural, community hospitals offering opportunities for medical student rotations and residencies. 

According to SHSU President Dana Hoyt, “80% of counties in Texas are classified as medically-underserved, largely due to a severe shortage of primary care physicians. The state also ranks 47^thin the number of primary care physicians and by 2030 this shortage is projected to worsen by 67 percent.”
