Happy Tails for Happy Trails

October 16, 2017

If you and your dog are the outdoorsy types (and what dog isn’t?) then you may be tempted to bring him along on your next hike. But whether you plan to enjoy our new nature trails (maybe during Bark in the Park Nov. 4?) or discover new paths to tread, you’ll want gear for your dog as well.

Not sure what you’ll need? Here are some dog-tested, dog-approved ideas.

Trail Packs

Canine dog packs mean your four-legged friend can carry some of his own gear. It's recommended that your dog carry no more than 25-30 percent of their body weight in their dog pack. Make sure the fit is snug and your pooch will be carrying most of the weight over the shoulders rather than mid-back. These are highly rated by dog-owners:

Leashes and Harnesses

A leash should be long enough to allow your dog to explore but short enough to keep him out of danger. Harnesses should be comfortable and durable. If you think you might be out after dark, a light-up collar will help you keep track of Fido.

Water Bowls (and something to put in them)

Your dog is bound to get thirsty out on the trails, so be sure to pack a collapsible bowl and enough water for both you and your friend.

First Aid and More

You wouldn’t go hiking without a first aid kit for yourself, so make sure your dog carries one, too. While hiking boots might not be an option, trails are hard on naked paws. And don’t forget, insects bug your dog too.
