New Identity For Former Camp Strake Property Reflects Plans For Distinctive Forest Living Experience

December 30, 2014

The development team of the 2,046-acre site known for decades as Camp Strake has created a new identity for the property – Grand Central Park – symbolic of its goal to create a distinctive forest living experience with a decidedly urban feel.

Bordered by I-45 and Loop 336 in the City of Conroe, Grand Central Park is one of the largest available land parcels within the Greater Houston area.  Located just north of The Woodlands along the rapidly expanding I-45 corridor, it also is less than 10 miles north of the new ExxonMobil corporate campus currently under construction.

Grand Central Park reflects the development team’s plans for a dynamic, urban approach to living, shopping and dining in a pristine and protected wooded environment, according to General Manager Virgil Yoakum of The Johnson Development Corp. “We’re taking a very careful, measured approach to protect or enhance the natural assets of the property,” he says.

To compliment the new name, the team has created a new logo with vibrant green and blue colors featuring a traditional fleur-de-lis paired with a modern look that is historical, yet references the modern appeal Grand Central Park has to offer.

The Grand Central Park theme also will be carried out throughout the property in parks, green spaces, play spaces and environments created for special experiences.

“Grand Central Park will be the perfect blend of work with play, nature with urban and excitement with serenity,” Yoakum adds.  “It’s where someone can enjoy a vibrant city neighborhood or the ability to live and shop among majestic trees shading a spectacular lake.”

Earlier this year, Houston-based Fidelis Realty Partners announced plans for 750,000 square feet of retail and restaurants, scheduled to open by early 2017, at the highly visible southwest corner of the property, the first major sale for the development. Read more here.

One of the nation’s preeminent land developers, The Johnson Development Corp. purchased the property in 2013 from the Sam Houston Area Council Boy Scouts of America. The company also manages the development of ten Houston-area master-planned communities including four of the nation’s top 20 best sellers. Its portfolio of master-planned communities includes two in north Houston – Woodforest and Harmony – along with Cross Creek Ranch, Imperial, Riverstone, Sienna Plantation, Edgewater, Fall Creek, Tuscan Lakes and Willow Creek Farms.
